Current Outreach Programs
Food Bank
Our committee has decided to become involved with a program called
“Food for Life” that provides boxes of food for lower income seniors (55+.)
We will need volunteers once a month to help pick up the boxes of food
from the food bank and deliver them to approximately 5-10 seniors in the Hartwood
area. If you know of a senior that needs a “helping hand” and may be eligible, contact the church office.
We
have begun collecting nonperishable foods to start a food pantry at our church. It
will be used to create emergency boxes for people who are experiencing hard times. Items
suggested by the food back to be put into the boxes are; dry cereal, nonperishable milk, peanut butter, jelly/jam, tuna, other
canned meat, dry spaghetti/pasta, pasta sauce, macaroni and cheese, canned soup, canned meats (stews, ravioli, etc), ramen
noodles, canned vegetables and fruits, crackers, canned juice, snacks, cookies, baby food, formula, hygiene items (soap, toothpaste,
etc.) The food pantry will not be available for several months as we need to
collect the foods that will be stored there first.

Meals at TBHS
Adult and youth volunteers prepare an evening meal for the Thurman Brisben Homeless Shelter residents. For
each meal there is one adult coordinator to plan the menu, buy the food (with reimbursement through the Helping Hands,)
and lead a team totaling not more than five people to cook and serve the meal. The adult coordinator can organize the
meal service team or seek the help of Kate Vincent, (540) 752-7147 or kkillham@fbiacademy.edu, or Emily Sperlazza, (540) 752-4901 or logcabin85@msn.com, to identify helpers. The guidelines are simple, and the residents will
be appreciative regardless of your cooking skills. Contact Kate to volunteer and also to fax you the guidelines, tips,
hints and directions to the shelter. Available dates in 2007 are June 3, September 9 and October 14.

“MINUTE MEN”
We have an exciting collaboration going between the Helping
Hands Team, the Youth group and the Pastoral Care Committee!! In an effort to
minister to our HPC shut-ins and more vulnerable members, we are developing a list of folks who are willing to help them in
a variety of ways. There are folks who can help with short-term handy man type
activities (such as change a light bulb or fuse, unclog a drain, etc), prepare a meal, or provide transportation. If there are bigger projects needed, our youth group can help with the labor involved. The Pastoral Care Committee has offered to be the initial contact for the person in need. If you know of someone, or you yourself have a need, please call Edna
Leake to let her know what you need. She will then contact someone who can
help out. If the project will require the Youth labor, you may also get in touch with
Kurt Chewning to coordinate the effort.
We at Hartwood Presbyterian Church are truly blessed with
a generous and willing spirit. If you are interested in helping to coordinate these or other mission and outreach efforts,
contact Emily Sperlazza, 752-4901 or logcabin85@msn.com
